If you've been looking at custom timber furniture in Melbourne but haven't reached out yet, this is probably why: you're not sure what to say, what information you need to have ready, or whether what you're imagining is even possible.
The short answer is that you need far less than you think, and most of the figuring-out happens in the first conversation. We've been making furniture to order at our Mordialloc workshop since 2014, and almost every piece we've built started with a pretty rough idea.
Here's how it actually works.
Do you need a full brief before getting in touch?
No. A rough sense of what you're after - the type of piece, the room it's going into, any size constraints you're aware of - is enough to get started. You don't need timber samples, CAD drawings, or a mood board (though if you have those, feel free to bring them).
Most enquiries start with something like: "I need a dining table for a narrow kitchen" or "we want a bed frame with storage underneath." That's genuinely enough to have a useful first conversation.
What happens in the first consultation?
We work through the details together. In person at our Mordialloc showroom, or on a call if you're in Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane or elsewhere. We'll ask about the space, how you use the room, the aesthetic you're going for, and whether there are any non-negotiables like specific dimensions, cabinetry needs or timber species.
By the end you'll have a clear sense of what's possible, what it's likely to cost, and roughly how long it'll take. No obligation, no hard sell.
What can actually be customised?
Most things can be customised, with the only contraints being the type of work or designs our machinery is set up to produce. This can include dimensions, timber species, finish, profile, leg style, hardware, and door/drawer configuration for storage pieces. A dining table that's 2.4m long but only 80cm wide to fit a long but narrow room? Challenge accepted.
Things that come up regularly:
- Non-standard heights (for people who are taller, or with back or posture considerations)
- Matching an existing piece or a specific floor colour
- Bathroom vanities sized to fit an awkward alcove or recess Record player cabinets to display extensive vinyl collections
- Bedside tables to elegantly hide a CPAP machine
- Bed frames with integrated storage or a specific bedhead profile
If you're not sure whether something is possible, just ask and we'll let you know if it's in our wheelhouse.
How long does a custom piece take?
Typically 8-12 weeks from when you confirm your order and the deposit invoice is received. The exact timeline may depends on how many projects are in the pipeline and the complexity of what you've chosen.
If you're working to a hard deadline like a move date, a renovation completion, a gift, let us know upfront and we'll be straight with you about whether we can meet it.
What does custom timber furniture cost?
More than flat-pack, but usually less than most people expect. The price reflects solid, FSC-certified timber, construction built to last decades, and a 10-year structural warranty we stand behind.
We provide a full quote before you commit. No hidden costs, no surprises on delivery day.
A useful way to think about it: you're not buying furniture you'll replace in five years. You're buying something that'll still be in your family in twenty.
Why order from a Melbourne workshop rather than importing from overseas?
When you buy from us, you're talking directly to the people building your piece. You can visit the workshop, see the timber before it's used, and ask questions at any stage. If something needs to be resolved, you speak directly to the makers.
We have been making quality timber furniture since 2014. That longevity is part of why we can genuinely offer a 10-year structural warranty.
